Lectures

Friday, March 10, 2017
11:00-12:00 Malka Dubrawsky - Making It Up: Improvisational Quilting Then and Now

Malka has been drawn to improvisational quilts since she first encountered Eli Leon's seminal book, Who'd a Thought It , more than 20 years ago. Like many quilters of her generation, she was drawn to the raw energy and powerful colors of these textiles. Though she sought to learn the process behind this piecing method, as a modern quilter, she wanted to adapt the technique to that aesthetic, a goal shared by many of her contemporaries. In this lecture, she will trace the history of improvisational piecing to its roots in the African-American quilts of the Bay area and Gees Bend as well as its "discovery" by a new generation of art and modern quilters. She will also discuss how "improv" has changed as it's techniques have been re-imagined for use in functional, modern quilts.

2:00-3:00 p.m. Laura Wasilowski - I Quilt, Therefore, I Am

A colorful and humorous history of the artist’s life presented with slides of her narrative quilts like “Gus Cleans His Room” and “Nude Blue Chair Reclining”. The biographical section of the slide show is followed by information about the design process and techniques used in creating her quilts. A selection of tunes from the Chicago School of Fusing Bond Fire Songbook will be sung throughout the lecture by the intrepid lecturer. Along with the lecture, is a display of small art quilts and a trunk show of hand dyed fabric and threads from the Artfabrik dyers.

Saturday, March 11, 2017
11:00 a.m. Laura Wasilowski -  Where Did I Go Wrong:  Confessions of a Serial Quilter

Explore the artist’s quirky mind with this lecture about quilt making in a series. Enjoy the revelation that one chicken quilt will surely lead to a second, third or fortieth. And discover what drives a person to create multiple quilts about a blue chair, garden implements, or unsung kitchen appliances. All is revealed in this exposé, the Confessions of a Serial Quilter. After the lecture, which includes dramatic renditions from Songs of the Fuser, Laura will display her small quilts (“mini-series quilts”) and offer a trunk show of hand-dyed fabric and threads from the Artfabrik dyers

2:00 p.m. John Flynn - Confessions of a Non-Traditional Quilter

John tells the story of how he became a quilter, and does “show and tell” of some of his quilts to illustrate his stories. John is well known for his humor so bring your funny bone, and also bring your “Significant Other”, he or she will be entertained!

Sunday, March 12, 2017
11:30 a.m. John Flynn - The Perfect Cover

John’s son’s buddy thinks he's really a secret agent and that traveling as a “quilt teacher” is his cover. Hear stories “from the road” and slides of quilts and quilters from all over the world.
